Morgan Wallen sat down with “Good Morning America’s” Michael Strahan for his first interview since video surfaced of him saying a racial slur.

Discussing the video, he explains, "I was around some of my friends, and we just ... we say dumb stuff together," adding, "And it was -- in our minds, it's playful ... that sounds ignorant, but it -- that's really where it came from ... and it's wrong."

Morgan insists that at the time of the video he, “didn't mean it in any derogatory manner at all,” adding that at the time he was “drunk.” He also says he was “not sure” why he felt it was okay to use the word. "I think I was just ignorant about it," he said. "I don't think I sat down and was, like, 'Hey, is this right or is this wrong?'"

Since the video came out, Morgan checked himself into rehab, and says he’s spoken with the Black Music Action Coalition (BMAC), as well as record executive Kevin Liles, Eric Hutcherson, executive vice president and chief people and inclusion officer at Universal Music Group and gospel singer BeBe Winans.

  • Asked if he now understands why people were so upset, Morgan shared, "I don't know how to put myself in their shoes because I'm not" adding, "But I do understand, especially when I say I'm using it playfully or whatever, ignorantly, I understand that that must sound, you know, like, 'He doesn't -- he doesn't understand.'"
  • As for whether country music has a race problem, he responded, "it would seem that way, yeah," before adding, "I haven't really sat and thought about that."
  • As for those who’ll question his motivations for speaking out now, Morgan says, “I'm not ever gonna make, you know, everyone happy," adding, "I can only come tell my truth, and -- and that's all I know to do."

ONE MORE THING! Morgan has sold the home he was living in at the time the video was recorded.TMZ reports he sold the four-bedroom, three bath home in Nashville for $835,000. The site reports that Morgan's neighbors probably aren't sad to see him go, with many telling TMZ he routinely made a lot of noise coming in at early hours of the morning.
